"Shamate"(SMART), as a group of Chinese workers, exploded into the limelight in 2008 with their strange hairstyle and unique fonts, and have disappeared after only five years of existence. Everyone in China knows about them. The social identity of the SMARTs are that of workers (partly child labourers), second generation migrant workers, children left behind and migrant workers, but the urban elite and the intelligentsia refuse to understand the aesthetic and existential conditions of the lower classes.
The film shows how 'shamates' are involved in the three steps of industrial production: 'process-product-profit'. As a result of exploitative assembly line labour, they have developed a highly individualistic hairstyle subculture. This is in stark contrast to the standardised products they produce. With the globalisation of the economy, the products are relevant to our everyday lives. What's more, the salary they earn is only a small fraction of the benefits that capitalists receive.
Through my work, "aliens in the assembly line ", I want to try to interpret how the SMARTs were born and disappeared, about the exploitation of labour in the fashion industry, about the connection with each of us after the globalisation of the economy.
